Winter Songwriting Sessions is a 6-week mentorship for emerging singer-songwriters, designed to guide you from first idea through to a finished song.

Across six Sunday afternoons, we’ll explore the core elements of songwriting — lyrics, melody, structure, editing, and performance — within a supportive, small-group environment.

The program culminates in an intimate “in the round” showcase, where you’ll share your original song with friends and family.

Led by acclaimed published Perth songwriter and WAAPA lecturer Helen Shanahan, this is a space to deepen your craft, build confidence, and connect with other songwriters.

The 6 week Songwriting Sessions with Helen Shanahan has been one of the most personally interesting and challenging endeavours I have undertaken, and I have far exceeded my own expectations and thoughts on what I might have been able to produce. Helen has a wonderful way of leading you through the theoretical side of songwriting and performance techniques, and providing guidance and feedback that enables you to revise and build on your songs so that it is all your own work.  It was also great to be part of a group with such great diversity of backgrounds and styles which broadened my thinking into other genres and writing styles. 

I am not a musician/singer so didn’t believe I would be able to participate in something like this however with great assistance from Helen to turn the very basic melody in my head into actual music we were able to bring the songs to life. 

I would wholeheartedly recommend this series of workshops to anyone with an inkling of wanting to try songwriting.  Thank you to Helen, and to all the group, for an amazing time with fantastic outcomes from all.
